Community Oral History
My recent academic and creative projects surround the historiography, assimilation patterns, and local treatment of Central American religious minorities, specifically Jews and Mormons. A dedicated oral historian, I collected testimonies from the 60-family Jewish community in El Salvador as a Fulbright Scholar in 2005-2006.
After graduating from Barnard College in 2003, I moved to Washington, DC. During these two years I worked for the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, where I studied the trafficking of women and children for sexual purposes in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Suriname, and Brazil. I received my M.A. in History with a concentration in Latin American and Jewish History from Indiana University in 2008. The same spring, I completed the radio program at the Salt Institute in Portland, Maine.
My work and projects have appeared in Bust, Barnard Magazine, The Washington Post, Proteus, Wonkette, and Public Radio International. I have also published two short stories in Taking Root: Latin American Jewish Women Writers and To Mend the World: Women Reflect on 9/11 (both edited by Marjorie Agosín).

Avishay got his start in radio at WPFW-Pacifica Radio in Washington, D.C., where he covered local politics and helped produce the weekly shows MetroWatch and Voices With Vision. After my work permit ran out, I returned to Los Angeles, my home city, and continued as an arts reporter for KCRW. While there, I reported and produced an award-winning documentary on Japanese-American internment during World War II. Shortly after, I was accepted to a National Public Radio residency, which brought me to Washington and to WBUR in Boston to report stories for NPR’s Performance Today.
I later attended the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. After that, I remained in New York City for 9 years, during which time I worked primarily as a reporter on public television and radio. I hosted and produced a weekly arts and culture segment for WNYC TV, a PBS station, until it went out of business (thanks to then Mayor Giuliani, who sold the station). Before the lights went out, I managed to produce a mini-documentary on the making of a Philip Glass opera, based on Jean Cocteau\'s “Les Enfants Terribles.”
I worked next as a correspondent for a nationally televised PBS program called “Freedom Speaks,” which focused on the media until it, too, was taken off the air. (I detect a pattern here…) In between gigs, I worked as a freelance reporter for WBAI and WNYC radio, covering local politics and the arts.
I then moved to Maine, where I lived by the harbor in Kittery, and worked as a reporter for New Hampshire Public Television. There, I covered the New Hampshire presidential primary season, and interviewed the major presidential candidates. I also participated as a panelist in nationally televised presidential debates, hosted by Peter Jennings and Tim Russert.
Following the conclusion of the New Hampshire primary season, I moved to Boston, where I initially did freelance writing on academia, the 2004 presidential campaign and the single life, among other subjects. From this base, I launched ThoughtCast.
By providing detailed, unhurried and personal conversation with current writers and thinkers, ThoughtCast aims to be both engaging and informative -- a hybrid that is (in my view) shockingly absent from most of American media today -- but happily NOT from AIR members!

From 2009 to 2010 I hosted and produced ArtBeat on 89.9, WUCF in Orlando, Florida. And I am currently an intern/associate producer for \"State of the Re:Union\", where I\'m working to help beef up their web content with print and audio features.
In addition to being a producer and a nationally published still photographer (versed in both digital and film) I am also a published writer and author. My hope is to combine these assorted skills on future projects of merit.
Equipment currently used: Adobe Audition, an Olympus LS-10 flash recorder, a Zoom h2 flash recorder, and a Beyer M58 mic. Also a Nikon D70 Manual SLR Digital camera with assorted lenses.
In 2007 I attended the advanced radio workshop, \"Making it Sing\" at CDS. And I participated in the Public Radio Talent Quest, where I placed in the top 100, both in Popular Vote and Judges\' Picks. I attended the Third Coast festival in 2008.

Following her formal education — she holds a B.A. from the University of Nebraska, and an M.A. from the University of Minnesota — she spent 15 years as a stringed-instrument repairperson, before moving on to full-time employment at Minnesota Public Radio — work not requiring Band-Aids. There, she was on the production teams of Good Evening with Noah Adams, First House on the Right and A Prairie Home Companion.
These days, you can find her in her home office in south Minneapolis, where her workday attire is likely to feature sweats or a bathrobe.

Barbara was Western Knight Fellow at USC Annenberg School for Communication’s program on Water and the New West in 2002. In 2004 she attended the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment at the University of Colorado at Boulder and in 2006 was a workshop participant in the SoundVision Science Literacy Project at KQED in San Francisco.
She is currently working on a radio documentary about forest fire management practices in the West.

I interned at NPR\\\\\\\'s Arts Desk in the Fall of 2003, and then went on to live in Montreal and later Tasmania - where I did odd jobs such as designing psychometric tests and picking grapes. In my free time I hung out at the community radio stations.
I\\\\\\\'m interested in varying subject matter. I\\\\\\\'ve covered arts, education, sports, the justice system, religion and politics. But what I\\\\\\\'m most moved by is people who are living by their own values system and who do what they do because of passion and values, not societal reward.
In other incarnations, write for magazines, graphic design, take photos, produce independent films and doodle.
I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a BA in Art History and a certificate in Integrated Liberal Studies. I\\\\\\\'m also a student of radio Jedi master David Candow.
