EMPLOYMENT

CNN
(February 2008 - Present)
Managing Editor CNN / US

I provide editorial guidance to lead CNN programs and correspondents to follow our own news agenda, with the goal of higher quality enterprise and investigative reporting. Working with program producers and bureau chiefs, I devise coverage plans for large-scale news stories, series and special initiatives. Network Booking reports directly to me, and that unit runs guest booking during breaking news situations and works to bring new voices to air. I help run the quality assurance team, which involves the quarterly monitoring and evaluation of network programs. I facilitate weekly producer meetings to make sure program staffs are executing CNN’s journalistic vision. I also write the Most Intriguing Persons column at cnn.com/mip.

NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO
(March 2001 – February 2008)
Senior Vice President for Programming

I led the creation, acquisition, and growth of all NPR programming, more than 1400 hours each week, on broadcast radio, HD radio, satellite radio, online, and through such platforms as podcasting and cell phones. I was also involved in the strategic planning that transformed NPR from what was once a radio entity into a digital media company. During my years there, NPR news, talk, entertainment and music programming was heard each week by 26 million people through 820 non-commercial, public radio stations across the country. NPR Worldwide reached 150 countries. Each month on average, npr.org attracted 6 million unique visitors. NPR Podcasting generated more than 10 million downloads a month.

At the age of 17, I began at a public radio station in New York City, and after graduating college, worked at NPR for nearly fourteen years, having created Morning Edition, the #1 program in public radio and the #1 rated morning program in all of radio. After fourteen years at CBS Television—the last five years at 60 Minutes—I returned to NPR as SVP for Programming.
