Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Live Celebration! is an annual concert and broadcast event which takes place in New York City's vast Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In this awesome setting, Winter takes his Cathedral audience and thousands of listeners on a symbolic musical journey through the longest night of the year, with the return of the sun represented by the world's largest tam-tam gong, played by a musician rising 110 feet above the Cathedral floor. | The Winter Celebration began as something of an alternative holiday affair, but after twenty years it has become, in a metropolis with many Christmas and New Year's events, perhaps the best-attended celebration of seasonal change in New York City. Since the first broadcast in 1987, the radio carriage of Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Celebration! has grown to almost 150 stations across the nation, and was rated NPR's third most popular cultural program special of the year.
