1999 marked the Ellington Centennial, and Jazz From Lincoln Center made a year-long celebration of Duke's massive body of work, which J@LC Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis calls "the touchstone of jazz". The range of the Ellington repertoire is explored from the eclectic solo piano of Sir Roland Hanna to Duke's intimate compositions for small bands with Nicholas Payton, to an extraordinary battle between the London Symphony Orchestra and America's premier big band, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. |     This montage submission, with segments from four programs, provides samples of our method and our sound. For this review, we've compressed the segments so you can hear the written and production values. The tape begins with single selections from "Con Alma: Afro Cuban Big Bands," "The World of Shirley Horn," and "Sir Roland Hanna Solo Piano II," concluding in Louis Armstrong favorites in "The Good Old Good Ones."
