2000 NFCB Golden Reel Award for National Public Affairs Programs
Becoming a Man

Submitted by: Joan Schuman
Press Release:     There are many ways of becoming a man, each with its own splendid adolescent angst. But what's it like to go through two puberties -- one as a girl-child becoming a woman. . . and then another, very intentionally, becoming a man? Producer Joan Schuman follows two different approaches to women becoming men, or as transgender folks like to call it, "F" to "M " . . . Female-to-Male. One is straightforward: "she" became a "he" and now passes quite seamlessly. The other swims in murkier gender waters.
"Becoming A Man" was produced for Outright Radio's series, "Uncommon Stories From Queer Folks" and won the NFCB Golden Reel Award for best national public affairs program in 2000.
